The first day of the Electronic Entertainment Expo hasn’t even begun yet, and Microsoft has already delivered a thunderous blow to its competitors with the introduction of a key feature for its Xbox One that will be coming this fall – the ability to play Xbox 360 games, either digitally or physically, on the newer system.
Microsoft announced the feature yesterday during its pre-E3 press conference in Los Angeles, California, with the option for select Xbox One Preview members to try out certain games before the feature rolls out system-wide this fall. This preview includes a number of popular games from the Xbox 360 library, including science fiction adventure Mass Effect and challenging platformer Super Meat Boy, among others.
With the feature, users can either download specific games from the Xbox Live Marketplace or insert discs, based on a compatibility list, into their machine to add to their game library.
Considering the “new” state of Microsoft’s console – and its focus on newer franchises like Gears of War and the forthcoming Halo 5: Guardians – some may wonder why the company is adding the feature. Well, it’s really a matter of comfort – and getting certain users to upgrade from older hardware to its new Xbox One.
