Amazon, looking to put a dent in the holidays with its line of tablets, has announced a pair of new models that will be very alluring to fans of the Kindle line.
Dubbed the HDX line, these Kindle Fire tablets will come in two models, a 7-inch and an 8.9-inch. The 7″ HDX has a 1920×1200 screen, while the 8.9″ HDX has a 2560×1600 resolution screen. The tablets run Amazon’s own variant of Android, Mojito, which means you are not able to use the Google Play store. The HDX series features a built-in “Mayday” button, which lets you chat instantly with a tech rep day or night should something be amiss with your device or account.
The devices also use a Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor, and have a lighter weight than previous Kindle Fire devices. It also allows you to download programs through Prime Video, which you can then watch anytime, even if you’re off-line. (A Prime subscription is required and currently goes for $79 a year.) Amazon will continue to sell the Kindle Fire HD, with a more attractive price of $139.
The Kindle Fire DX will sell for $229 or $329 (for the 4G LTE edition) for the 7-inch, and $379 or $479 (4G LTE) for the 8.9 inch version. The smaller tablet will ship October 18, and the bigger one December 10.
